Green Tea / Fake Matcha

Real Matcha vs. Fake Matcha

The top picture is how Real Japanese Matcha Powder looks after just adding water and before whisking. Notice the deep bright green color compared to the picture below. Real Matcha powder, no-matter the quality, has a bright green color. The bottom picture is green tea powder and water. The bottom picture is what Americans are drinking and it’s what everyone is buying in stores/online and labeled as “Matcha from Japan.”

Real matcha also tastes and smells completely different than green tea powder. Real Matcha has a rich earthy taste with only a slight bitterness. Green tea can be very cheap and grown in many different countries around the world. Real Matcha is only made in Japan. However, Japan also produces many types of Green Tea so US companies can import green tea much more cheaply than Matcha and still claim it’s from Japan.

Another problem people have when buying matcha, is that American companies package low-quality green tea powder into plastic pouches saying they are “Organic” and “Japanese Matcha” and “Ceremonial Matcha.” Japan doesn’t make Organic Matcha for Japanese people because matcha that isn’t organic, tastes much better, and because Japan’s extreme standards for food safety and cleanliness makes it unnecessary. Tourists whom visit Japan can find English labeled matcha powder with a JAS (Japan Agricultural Standards) Organic label because some Japanese companies made this matcha for tourists only and sold in the high-traffic tourist areas. Only tourists in Japan request Organic Matcha and that’s why the labeling is in English. Organic matcha always has a much stronger bitterness taste than non-organic matcha.

The term “Ceremonial Matcha” was not created in Japan. Other countries created this term as a way to describe the highest quality matcha powder. However, as more and more companies sell Matcha around the world, everyone uses “Ceremonial” to describe their matcha—even if it’s fake or low-quality.

Real Japanese Matcha that is the highest quality, is only sold in 40g or 30g packages. The reason for this is because real matcha should be consumed within 1 month after opening it. All Japanese matcha producers understand this and adhere to the same standards of maintaining the highest level of freshness for the consumer.

All of the fake matcha products sold in supermarkets and online, go unnoticed because very few people have actually tasted Real Japanese Matcha in the US. Real Matcha is extremely difficult to find in America. People think they are getting the extraordinary health benefits of matcha but actually, they are only drinking low-quality green powder (bottom picture).
